DeskLinks

Privacy Policy

Yes, even DeskLinks needs a privacy policy. How else can I reassure you that I'm not a big, evil corporation who just wants to collect URLs so I can gather aggregate data and sell them to other big, evil corporations for fun and profit?

With this in mind, here's the DeskLinks privacy policy...

  1. First off, let me tell you how you can contact me. I'm Ciaran Hamilton, and you can contact me at desklinks@theblob.org. So if you have an issue with this site, that's the address to send to. I promise I won't send your mail to /dev/null until I've seen it personally (or if you're spamming me, enough to know that it's a spam).

  2. The only data I collect from this service are: In the future I may require an email address as well, but for the moment, that's it. If I ever do require an email address, I promise I won't use it to spam you or give/sell it to third parties. If I do, feel free to hunt me down.

  3. As for hit tracking, I don't do hit tracking on your individual triggers. However, I do keep track of the total number of 'hits' (a successful redirect) and 'misses' (misspelt triggers that bring you to the "misspelt trigger" page) for each user. I do this in order to gauge how popular this is; no other reason. That's why I decided not to track hits on individual triggers. That would just be a bit too revealing, in my opinion.

  4. In the future, I may need to put ads on the site. However, if I do, I won't use pop-ups, pop-unders, or other intrusive stuff like that. I'll just have plain and simple banner ads, or maybe Google AdSense code. I will not show these ads on the redirect pages called from your search bar, otherwise it would just defeat the whole point of DeskLinks.

  5. I won't take your URLs and give them to a third party. If, somehow, somebody else takes over the running of this site (not at all likely, but hey, it could happen), I'll make them swear not to do that too. And keep the rest of these points. Yeah. Bring 'em on.

I think that's everything. If I've missed something, please let me know.

Back to the main page.

Full disclosure: I changed the point on this page that mentioned showing ads on 6th September 2005 to say this:

4. This site shows Google AdSense advertisements. There are no pop-ups, pop-unders, or other intrusive stuff like that; I hate them as much as you do. These ads are not shown on the redirect pages called from your search bar, as that would defeat the whole point of DeskLinks, which is to make it quick to get to your links. I use this service myself, so you can be assured there won't be any ads on those pages.

In addition, no ads are displayed on any URL which contains sensitive information, such as your username and password, or a link in your trigger list.
It was changed back to its original wording on 28th March 2007.
