Welcome to my journal. This is where I'll be revealing my innermost thoughts and feelings to the world. Occasionally I'll talk about other stuff, but mostly about my experiences.

Jan 5, 2003: Firewall and Journal Stuff (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 09:43 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

You remember I told you that I have another answer to the firewall problem? Well, Neil (of Neil's World fame) pointed me towards a product called MandrakeSecurity Multi Network Firewall. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks quite good.

At first, though, I was put off by the price - $1,990 (about £1,327). There was no way I was going to be able to use it at that price. However, Neil also pointed me towards the fact that it can be downloaded freely from the site. Now, I don't know about you, but that strikes me as weird. Obviously the downloadable version must be a sort of cut-down version for it to be offered for free.

But anyway, I've still downloaded it, and soon I'll be testing it on the real box (VMware won't run on Windows 98, bleh). Stay tuned. :)

Meanwhile, as promised, here's what I'm planning to do with the blog code...

The first thing that will be done is to split the HTML code separately from the CGI files themselves. This goes hand-in-hand with another idea of mine - that of using "templates". Using templates, you'll be able to change the different ways in which it can display blog entries - which would make it easy to provide RSS/XML feeds of your blog, as well as making it easy to experiment with different designs for your blog.

Templates will be portable, meaning that to install a new template, all you would need to do is unzip the template into the right directory, and then it should be ready to use. :)

The specific files included in a template will include a main options file (whic tells the blog where everything is, as well as defining several format-specific options), and the files containing the layout of the template.

For this blog specifically (ie. this won't go into the journal code), I'll be making it so that I can blog via SMS. I'll be doing this using the SMS-to-email gateway provided by Andrews & Arnold. For some reason, though, they don't advertise the gateway on their site - they certainly used to, though. Makes me wonder if they're going to be discontinuing it soon... I hope not, I find it quite useful.

I'll also be providing a facility to add comments to entries - this might be done using Tim's mods to the code.

The one thing that I don't want to do is to make the blog code bloated. 17KB is a darn good size for something like this, and I hope my mods won't take it much past 25-30KB, if it even reaches that (which it probably will).

So there you have it. Let me know what you think of my proposed mods... I'm interested to know. :D
