The Blob: Ciaran's Journal

Welcome to my journal. This is where I'll be revealing my innermost thoughts and feelings to the world. Occasionally I'll talk about other stuff, but mostly about my experiences.

Jan 27, 2003: More Firewall News! (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 12:45 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Artisan - O Holy Night

Well, things are finally happening. :) The new computer has been ordered, and the appropriate network connections will be put in place soon, after a visit and a quote from the person doing it - they'll be visiting on Friday.

I've also found a new firewall package, courtesy of the LangaList Plus! edition. It's called ClarkConnect. They offer a free version and a paid one.

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out. I'll keep my eyes peeled on Google for reviews...

Jan 26, 2003: Am I spam or not? (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 10:10 - Mood: Puzzled - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

I came across a really weird email yesterday. The subject was gobbledygook, which is a very good indicator that the email is spam; I was just about to delete it out of hand when I saw the message. It had absolutely no commercial offers, no HTML, no "CLICK HERE NOW!" enticements.

In fact, the message itself was two lines of gobbledygook too. Here's the email including headers (with some parts starred out by me):

And that was it. I'm still trying to decide whether this falls under the definition of "spam" or the one of "just plain weird"...

Jan 24, 2003: Happy birthday! (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 15:34 - Mood: Very happy - Location: Home - Now playing: n/a

Well, it's one year since I wrote my first entry in this journal. Been quite a good year, too.

Blogging, to me, is a cool thing to do. It's nice to be able to write down what you're thinking.

I'm still working on the journal, btw, as I explained in an earlier post. It's going quite well, actually. I'm also going to make a new page on my site about the journal, so watch out for news of that. :)

Jan 15, 2003: The joy of One Hour Compos (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 17:33 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

One Hour Compos? What are they?

Well, I've mentioned them before in this journal, but I didn't explain them fully. However, I took part in another one two nights ago, after a long time of not doing any tracking. So, I thought I'd explain what tracking was, what OHCs are, and the meaning of life.

Well, all apart from that last one.

Jan 6, 2003: The 2003 Bloggies (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 20:58 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

Well, the 2003 Bloggies are now running. This being my first time of hearing about the Bloggies (from beebware's blog post, who heard it from Robyn, who heard it off Bill), I was interested.

It looks like a good compo. And this year, they're having an actual award ceremony in Austin, Texas. Being in the UK, though, I wouldn't be able to attend.

Doesn't stop you voting for me though. :) Why not nominate this entry in the "Best Programming of a Weblog Site" or my whole blog in the "Best New Weblog" category? Go on, you know you want to. :)

Jan 5, 2003: Firewall and Journal Stuff (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 09:43 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

You remember I told you that I have another answer to the firewall problem? Well, Neil (of Neil's World fame) pointed me towards a product called MandrakeSecurity Multi Network Firewall. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks quite good.

At first, though, I was put off by the price - $1,990 (about £1,327). There was no way I was going to be able to use it at that price. However, Neil also pointed me towards the fact that it can be downloaded freely from the site. Now, I don't know about you, but that strikes me as weird. Obviously the downloadable version must be a sort of cut-down version for it to be offered for free.

But anyway, I've still downloaded it, and soon I'll be testing it on the real box (VMware won't run on Windows 98, bleh). Stay tuned. :)

Meanwhile, as promised, here's what I'm planning to do with the blog code...

Jan 3, 2003: I'm back! (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 22:44 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

Yep, I'm back and raring to go. My thanks to Neil for posting the last post while I was away, and for both him and Tim for saying very nice things about my journal code. :) Believe me, I do plan on releasing it soon, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve before I do. They shouldn't take long to do.

I'll have to tell you about those another time, though, as I need to go now. But I promise I'll share with you the features I'm going to put in the journal in my next post. :)
