The Blob: Ciaran's Journal

Welcome to my journal. This is where I'll be revealing my innermost thoughts and feelings to the world. Occasionally I'll talk about other stuff, but mostly about my experiences.

May 20, 2003: This is the COOLEST THING EVAR! (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 16:37 - Mood: Very happy - Location: Home - Now playing: Nothing

I can't believe I didn't come across this before. You know about SID, the format that the Commodore 64 used to play music, right? And you know about the High Voltage SID Collection, right?

Well, even if you don't know about them, I'm a fan of them. And today I came across a new page that I think rocks, seriously. It's the SID Theme Search Engine. This allows you to search the HVSC for tunes. "What's so special about that?", you might ask. Well, this is different from other search engines - it doesn't search the author, title or anything like that. No, you give it some notes that make up a tune, then it searches the tunes themselves.

By itself, this is incredibly cool. But it gets better - because of the way the data is stored, it doesn't care if you put the notes in in the wrong key, because it'll find it anyway. My guess is that instead of storing the note names themselves for each tune, it records the difference in the number of semitones between each note, which would make it easy to do this sort of thing.

Since I have the HVSC on my computer already, this means I can search for tunes that I might know but don't know the names of, and in the process it finds remixes as well. Cool!

This is precisely the sort of thing I need to help me in my search for the What PC MOD Collection, except that obviously it's only for SIDs. I couldn't find an equivalent MOD search engine out there, which is a shame. :( I'm going to see if I can persuade The Mod Archive to make one - heck, I'll write the code if they want. If they don't want it, I'm planning on writing it anyway and using it on my own MODs.

I really like the idea, though. Nice one, Linus! :D

May 4, 2003: Interesting... (link | trackback: 0)

Hey, I've just noticed something. In the fansign, newwave spelt 'favourite' with a U. I find that interesting as newwave is an American, so he'd normally spell it 'favorite'. Ah well. I'm easily amused. ;p

Whoops, forgot to add. The creator of that fansign was ODP editor newwave. I can't believe I forgot to mention that. :o

May 4, 2003: Lotsa stuff! (link | trackback: 0)

Yay, I got my first fan sign from somebody today!

Okay, so that was only because I asked for one, but hey, it's an interesting one. Click on it if you want a larger picture.

By the way, if you're interested, the inspiration for the picture came from my 'tune' called My Favourite Food (warning: Listening to this tune may cause serious damage to your taste of music. Plus, it has burping in it.)

Oh, and ODP editor lundlinks emailed me after seeing the last entry to point out that How Not To Pray is available on Amazon.co.uk, although not on Amazon.com, it seems. Thanks, Harry!

May 1, 2003: Thoughts... (link | trackback: 0)

Gah. I'm so lazy. I meant to write an entry on the 27th to say I was back from Spring Harvest, but I gave up halfway through. I'm like that with quite a few of my blog entries. I really need to get my act together...

Anyway, I'm back, and I'm ready to rock. Some things that have happened or will be happening:
  • On Saturday, I'll be going to the ODP UK Editor Get Together in Cambridge. I went last year too, and I managed to meet beebware and Neil in person, which was pretty cool. Up to now, it's been the first and last time I've seen them face-to-face.

  • I've just had my first experience with the VMS operating system. It scarred me for life. Well, not quite - but it does take some getting used to.

  • I'm currently reading How Not To Pray by Jeff Lucas. I bought the book while at Spring Harvest, and it seems like a really good book. Unfortunately I couldn't find a link for it - not even on Amazon - so you'll just have to take my word for it.

  • I'm making yet more improvements to my journal code and I hope to be releasing a new version very shortly.
That's about it, I think...
