The Blob: Ciaran's Journal

Welcome to my journal. This is where I'll be revealing my innermost thoughts and feelings to the world. Occasionally I'll talk about other stuff, but mostly about my experiences.

Oct 28, 2002: How to have two shocks in one day... (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 15:45 - Mood: Happy - Location: Work - Now playing: n/a

Many are the words we speak,
Many are the songs we sing,
Many all these offerings,
But now to live the life...

-- Matt Redman, "Now To Live The Life"

I had a shock yesterday. Actually, I had two.

The first was when I woke up and came downstairs at 8:30am, switched on the computer monitor, and saw a message saying that my computer's clock had automatically updated as a result of Daylight Savings Time and would I please check to see if the settings were correct?

You see, here in the UK we've just come out of BST (British Summer Time), so the clocks went back yesterday - and as a result I'd got up an hour early, at 7:30am. Of course, everyone else knew about the clocks going back and got an extra hour's lie-in. Hrmph. ;p

The second shock was when I went to church to set everything up for the projections; every week, my church uses a laptop connected to a projector to display the words for the songs (which are in PowerPoint format) and I do this every other week.

But the shock came when I looked for the cables needed to connect everything together - and couldn't find them. I searched quite a few places for them, and asked the person who was on the PA desk at the time, but neither of us knew where they were. I tried phoning the person who does this on the weeks when I don't, but he wasn't in. Panic! Without the cables, we'd have to go back to using the overhead projector for the service; but I'd seen earlier that morning that the photocopier was out of toner, too, so I wasn't sure whether that'd work either.

I was almost ready to throw in the towel and set up the OHP when someone suggested phoning the other guy who works on the PA desk sometimes. I can't remember who suggested it, but I'm grateful to them, because the phone was answered and he knew where the cables were. Because I'd got everything else ready by that time, I was able to plug in the cables and have it working minutes before the service started. Phew.

Now, the ironic thing is that the guy who was on the PA desk that day had apparently been helping to move them last week, which was the week I hadn't been at church (okay, I admit, I had laid in... sorry ;)). Nobody had kept me in the loop, and it was weird that he hadn't remembered that he had moved them last week; but at least we managed to get it all done in the end. :)

And now for something completely different...

It's getting close to Halloween on the 31st of October. Now, from my Christian viewpoint, Halloween is a bad thing to get involved with. So, I thought that I'd do a write-up about it and explain exactly why Halloween is not a good thing. I haven't finished it yet, but I'll let you know as soon as I am - hopefully in time for Halloween itself.

See ya!

Oct 19, 2002: WAP support? (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 16:30 - Mood: Happy - Location: Home - Now playing: n/a

I am one of many whose path has been made clearer,
by the Light you've carried faithfully, as a warrior and a child...
God has used you greatly, to encourage and inspire,
and you've remained a true friend all the while...

So I will never put you on a pedestal,
'cause we both know all the glory is the Lord's,
and I'll be there to pray that He will keep you by His grace,
and I always will remind you to be seeking His face!

-- Twila Paris and Steven Curtis Chapman, "Faithful Friend"

Heya. I've been working on some new stuff for this journal recently. :)

Firstly, I'm working on a WAP version of this page. It's still under construction, but you can see how it looks by going to http://theblob.org/journal/ *on your mobile phone*. :)

And that brings me to the second of my announcements - the URL format for this journal has changed (or rather, the main format has changed, but previous URLs will still work). The URLs have been fudged to make them look like static URLs, when in fact, they're still served by the same old journal.cgi that's been serving 'em since the beginning. :D

You can now get to the journal at http://theblob.org/journal/ (HTML *or* WAP, it'll automatically detect which), and you access individual entries using an URL like http://theblob.org/journal/1034696817.html. Note that the old URLs will still work, and will continue to do so, but if you don't mind, I'd prefer that any URLs be changed to the new format. This is so search engines can index the content - normally they don't index CGIs. :(

I'll let you know when the WAP support is done. :)

Oct 15, 2002: The Site Market Game (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 15:46 - Mood: Very happy - Location: Work - Now playing: n/a

Yay! :D

Long-time readers may know that I'm a fan of RinkWorks, because it has a lot of cool stuff, including RinkChat and Computer Stupidities (that one always makes me laugh :D).

Well, recently, they re-opened the Site Market Game for the first time in more than two years. This is a game where particular RinkWorks features are up for "sale", and the object of the game is to buy and sell features in such a way as to be the player with the most money at the end.

Of course, none of it is real money, but for past games there were some... er, less-than-useful prizes. I would give a link, but the page I was going to link to is now a 404. It worked not so long ago, so Sam must have taken it down for this game, for some unknown reason. Ah well.

Anyway, as you might have guessed, I'm taking part in the game. However, I don't own either of the features I mentioned in the first paragraph, so no-one can accuse me of affecting the results. So I'll just offer you the opportunity of roaming around RinkWorks and seeing what tickles your fancy. Apart from anything else, it's a great site. :D

See ya...

Oct 9, 2002: The Prior-Art-O-Matic (link | trackback: 0)
Time: 10:54 - Mood: Happy - Location: Work - Now playing: n/a

Design #4117317085 - It's a genetically-modified sheep that moves from side to side! It dispenses tea or coffee.

Design #807732183 - It's an answering machine that has a retro 70s design, folds away when not in use and explodes when dropped.

...just a couple of product ideas from the Prior-Art-O-Matic. That thing is fun - not only can you get random product ideas, but you can give it the name of something and it makes up a product description - for example, I'm "an electronic implant! It is water-resistant!". Riiiiight.

It's quite fun. Take a look some time. :D
