Hi all,
Good news! The other day a friend of mine who also uses Linode (and is on
this list, actually - hi Pete!) saw this post on the Linode forums:
http://www.linode.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2634
Basically, each Linode plan is getting a doubling of its resources -
double the RAM, double the disk space, and double the bandwidth.
The bad news is that this isn't going to happen for matrix for a while, as
matrix is in the Dallas datacenter, and the new servers could take a
couple of weeks to arrive, so I'm not announcing any reboot schedule yet.
However, when it does go down it *may* need to be migrated to the new
server in a process that could take up to half an hour; I'm not sure yet.
More details as I come across them.
The bandwidth allowance has already been doubled, but to be honest I use
so little bandwidth at the moment that that wasn't a concern for me
anyway.
Here's what matrix has right now:
RAM: 192MB
HDD: 9GB (6GB base + 3GB for paying annually)
Bandwidth: 150GB (already doubled!)
What matrix will be getting:
RAM: 384MB
HDD: 18GB (12GB base + 6GB for paying annually)
Bandwidth: 150GB
I'll probably put the extra 9GB space straight into /home again, as I've
got enough on the other partitions and I don't plan to switch OSes,
although if I do I'll shrink the disks down again. No point right now
though.
The RAM increase is what's really worth it. This will probably make my
plans to upgrade that I described before obosolete, which would be worth
it. (I didn't actually get any donations in response to my plea earlier,
which means that I don't have to worry about giving any donations back as
it wouldn't be used. Don't worry, I'm not bitter at this, btw; if I was
you'd have heard about it before now. ^^)
So, yay! Good news all around. Have I mentioned before how Linode rules as
a VDS provider? Yes they do. If you need a VDS at all, I can thoroughly
recommend them.
I'll keep you up to date on what happens. Take care! :D
- Ciaran.
